Feed management

XL Beef is a complete and comprehensive concept dedicated to the fattening and finishing of beef cattle. Through XL Beef , ADM offers a package that optimizes feeding management at the various key phases of fattening.

Oversized results

XL Beef is also a set of farming management recommendations to ensure that the proposed feeding programs can fully express and thus optimize growing performance.

XL Beef: Expertise on farming management

XL Beef has identified different KPIs to be followed in the feedlot, which will be key for the economic performance of the fattening workshop :

  • Average Daily Gain (ADG): it must be between 1.5 to 2 kg during +/- 100 to 140 days. It is one of the major performance indicator.
  • Dry Matter Intake (DMI): 10 to 12 kg / animal / day. Intake is key, as it determines the amount of nutrients available to the animal for its growth. We must do everything in farming management to maximize it.
  • Limit health issues (acidosis and respiratory disorders): lung problems appear when animals enter the fattening workshop. Acidosis is a metabolic disease that occurs as soon as the diet becomes very intensive. This is an inevitable situation in order to achieve high levels of performance. XL Beef offers nutritional and management solutions to control these health risks.
Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR): 6 to 6.5 for 1. The consumption index (amount of dry matter to have a kilo of growth) describes feed efficiency. We must seek to lower it to better value the diet. It is also an essential indicator of performance.
  • Dressing percentage (carcasses yield): +/- 55%. We will try to maximize the carcass yield. This is a parameter which is linked to the breed (genetics), but also to the energy concentration of the diet.
Meat quality: it depends on market expectations in terms of color, marbling score, quantity and fat color. The quality of meat is linked to the expectations of the local consumer. XL Beef has solutions to orientate the color and the marbling.

Other parameters are very important for the economic result of the feedlot: the price and the quality of the lean animals that will then be fattened.

The purchase price of lean animals represents 65% of the final production cost. This is therefore a major element. You have to be attentive to the market to benefit from the best purchase prices. But that is not enough, as the initial quality of lean animals determines later performance.

ADM has identified the key points to control when purchasing animals that will allow the farmers to meet their technical and economic performance objectives.

XL Beef: Feed management expertise

XL Beef offers specific feeding recommendations for 3 very distinct phases:

  • Initiation / adaptation period
  • Transition or growth period
  • Finishing period

A specific approach is proposed for each phase.

INITIATION

The initiation phase is particularly sensitive. Animals are often stressed at this time. The risks of under-performance are maximum. We must therefore offer a lighter diet and avoid accentuating health problems.

GROWTH

This is the time to increase the concentration of the diet to achieve the target ADGs.

FINISHING

At this stage, growth is maximum. A diet must be provided to support this growth and ensure meat quality in line with market expectations.

XL Beef: Innovative product solutions for better profitability

ADM has designed XL Beef , a specific nutritional program for fattening cattle, including premixes and nucleus that can be used to customize the diet of each of the fattening stage.

XL Beef will participate in achieving high level of technical and economic performance, in line with market needs and expectations.

XL BEEF PROGRAM CUSTOMIZES ITS OFFERS INCLUDING ADD-ON NUCLEUS:

  • Buffer nucleus to limit the impact on acidosis
  • Slow-release urea in order to supply non-protein nitrogen during the day
  • By-pass fat to increase the concentration of the diet during the finishing period
  • Medium chain fatty acids as an alternative to zilpaterol hydrochloride or chromium during the last month

PRODUCTS

PREMIXES:

  1. XL ADAPT 5%
  2. XL TRANSIT 5%
  3. XL FINISH LM Z 2.5%
  4. XL FINISH LM C 2.5%

NUCLEUS:

  1. Buffer nucleus
  2. Slow release urea nucleus
  3. By-pass fat nucleus
  4. Medium chain fatty acids nucleus

Finally, XL Beef has identified, throughout the production cycle, 3 key parameters related to feeding, that will maximize profitability:

  • Promote and stimulate the intake
  • Prevent respiratory disorders
  • Control acidosis

XL Beef offers nutritional solutions to optimize these key points.
