The main consequences of heat stress on swine are a sudden decrease of feed intake, a reduction of weight gain, an increase of mortality and an increase of fat deposition. When sows are kept under high temperature as usual in farrowing crates, their feed intake, performances, as well as welfare are negatively affected resulting in economic losses.

In addition, the increase of blood flow to extremities can lead to a reduction of nutrient and oxygen delivery to enterocytes creating inflammation and alteration of the intestinal integrity.
